Many family & friends are getting married this year, included my sister. Congratulations to all happy couples. Some are planning a proposal ( shh..I cant say who), while some are already getting a new house. :) It's gonna be a busy year for me and I am very glad to be part of it. Now on hand, I've got 3 wedding rooms to design and 2 newlywed's house.
The first room is one of my good friends from high school. She wanted me to paint her "出门" room.
"出门" room (pronounce as Chu Men ) is the bride's room where she will hide, and the groom & best man will have to go through all sort of games prepared by the bridesmaids in order to find her. They will be alot of people taking photos and video, so having the room done is gonna make the pictures really lovely and memorable!
Her request is : "I like butterflies, I like anything you design. Something sweet."
Her room's wall is narrow and tall. So I've decided to sketch her a pair of big butterflies, one flying higher than the other, in fine lines and violet color, surrounded in a garden background. Here's my rough sketch.

Chinese Opera- Inspired
Today is Chap Goh Mei- The last day of Chinese New Year, here I want to wish everyone 元宵节快乐!( Happy Chap Goh Mei )
During this Chinese New Year, my sister and family celebrated in Foshan & Guang Zhou, China, where my future brother in-law lives. And they took many beautiful pictures. I found some of them very interesting and immediately I am very much inspired to try an Opera Mural.
Here are some of the pictures my sister took, which inspired me.

Dragon Tattoo Design
It might hurts you a little bit on the skin, but it doesn't hurt to try it on the wall. :)
I know some of my guy friends been telling me :" can you design something for us too?something not pink?" So, today I designed this specially for the guys.
I had always nicknamed my mural as walltattoo, but I have not tried to do a real tattoo design until now.It is actually pretty interesting, although compositing the detail is kinda tiring, but I didn't want to use any ready made tattoo designs from the internet in respecting of other people's design and I didn't want it to be compact, it has to give the room a style, so I design what I think would be best for the room, it took me 4 hours, it's all worth it. I think in future, I'll probably do a few more lilke this one, cause I think nothing beats a giant tattoo on the wall. This requires a little bit of airbrushing. Just A LITTLE bit on the dragon's scales.
There's few types of dragon painting style. The Chinese "Gong Bi" type(strong strokes, big popping eyes, usually very fierce looking ) the Japanese Kai Ga type ( cleaner, fine strokes, alot of neat toning ) and also the Harry Potter type and not forgetting the "How to train your dragon" type, which is SO CUTE!!!
The one I tried today is the Japanese type.

Glow In the DARK!
One day back in 2008, a man called me. He told me he works with a group of people from China who paint ceilings with glow in the dark paint using air-brush and they are interested to work with me. So I spent 2 days learning how to use air-brush with glow in the dark paint. The funny thing is, when he found out that I learn things pretty fast ( which is supposed to be a good thing to some employer), he stopped teaching me after the 2nd day. Sadly he only taught me some basic skills and how to paint a glowing realistic moon. We only worked together on one major project and I decided to stop.
First reason was, they don’t talk openly. The way they deal with things seems a little bit too secretive and phony. I dint like this kind of style.
Secondly, I was a bit worry about the Glow in the dark paint. Although, they showed me some paper work from the lab, to prove that it is toxic-free. I’m not too sure those papers are real.
Third, when he was teaching me air-brushing, we had to off the lights and turn on the UV light tube ( cause u can’t see the glow in the dark paint under normal lights, they r either transparent or white in color) , in the dark room, I noticed… his teeth are all glowing! So I quickly check-- Mine doesn’t glow, my partner’s one doesn’t glow. Just his. (he been spraying with those paint for years, and probably the impact of the air gun has pushes the paint back at him and it GETS into him literally) As much as I felt sorry for him, I dint want to have GLowing teeth myself. And I will never ever paint any of my client’s house with a paint that I think it’s not safe and unhealthy. Home is a place to raise a family, and paint like this vaporizes. Can you imagine what kind of air these people are sucking in? I mean..I imagined the worst, so I never did any Glowing walls for any homes.
HOWEVER…I dint want to put those GLowy Paint to waste. Cause there’s so much stuff in my head that I wanted to paint with them. Such as glowing jelly fish! Glowing cat’s eyes under a big Glowing moon! Glowing stars under a dark night! SO…I figured out a way. I decided to paint with a brush instead of an air-brush. And after it’s done, I’ll seal it with a layer of Varnish. Not too sure if it’ll work, but it should be fun to give it a try. So I begin to think of what to paint…and it hits me! I had always loved Blizzard’s WOW characters and during that time, the character I loved the most was Illidan Stormrage. I had always imagined that he would have look great if he GLOWS!
So, I painted Illidan. And gave it to my husband-Kevin, as a gift.
Here are the pictures when the UV lights are on.

My little promotion Project.
Usually clients love flowery design. However, I'm really interested to try something different. So I'm planning to come out with 5 (a little bit rare) designs and gonna find some (up for it ) house/shop owners to let me paint it up. The thing I'm gonna offer is, I'm not gonna charge for the work, I'll be only charging on the material fee. I'll post up the visual of that 5 designs here in my blog, if you are interested, let me know! Email me at walltattoo@gmail.com

Who wants a mural while we have stickers?
I'm a mural designer. A lot of ppl tot I’m doing this majorly for money and they think the wall stickers trend is killing me. The truth is, I buy wall stickers to stick on my living room too!hehe…we gotto try everything! it’s life!
I never feared the stickers trend. It’s same like tattoo artist never feared the sticker tattoos market. It’s actually 2 very different thing and effects. Murals on wall are like tattoo on skin. They grace each other, they radiate a characteristic, and they glow together with the room lightings instead of reflecting it like a sticker tattoo on skin that gives ppl a very kiddy/plastic feeling. It gives the space a unique character, instead of a mass produced trend. I don’t mind if one day I realize not much ppl love what I do, I mind if I don’t do what I love. So even if few ppl love it, I would still enjoy doing the best for them.
This is one of a small wall in my Living room where I put on the wall stickers. See how the right side one is reflective? This is what I mean. |
My mum asked me :" What if most ppl dun demand for it?" I told her :" Then I'll have more time giving perfection to those who does." :)
School's murals are not my thing.
I had never painted any murals for my school.Cause I never like those types of murals. I always found them looking really chalky and static. It almost felt like painting a flag on a wall just for the sake of filling up the space.I never understand why, and I tot..there is SO MUCH MORE we can do to a wall than a chalky fill-up-the-space-ecstatic-mural, it’s almost infinity!
When I was in kindergarten, I remembered clearly the walls are filled with Mickey mouse, Donald duck and other characters that don’t quite look like those from Disney. The nose is abit longer than usual and the eyes are like smaller and sharper, it wasn’t a biggie that time, I was just a regular Chinese kid, in a kindergarten run by a Chinese headmistress so… I tot it was a Chinese version of Disney characters. But now, I really think someone should (gently) put a stop to those out-of-proportions Mickey Mouse. Whisper*…It’s weird.
It’s a funny question when ppl asked me :” did u started this type of wall mural 1st or is it that so & so who started 1st?” I never cared who is the 1st guy who starts painting wall murals. Cause as I recall, some caveman started it 1st. And the trend become a hit since centuries ago, most pillars of the old Palaces in India are filled with beautiful hand-painted flora motives. And then came Michelangelo who started painting ceilings and all sorts. I think it's not really important to find out who started it, I think it's good to know who keeps it going, cause I believe, art done by hands, grace a space in a special way.
These aren't my work. I am not gonna say anything bad about it. Personally, I'm just showing you some samples of mural that I don't quite like since my school time.

My First mural- A cherry blossom tree.
I was 15, came home one day from Chinese Painting class, and suddenly I found this particular half-pillar in my house is kinda annoying. My dad renovated the house and they are unable to flatten this pillar, so I tot...maybe i should do something to it.I wasn't thinking much, I just do it. Luckily, it came out okey and my parents are glad.
And you know what is the funny thing? I did this with Chinese painting black ink and "Zhu Sha" -(a type of red powder pigment) as the blossom color. And the color lasted more than 13 years now without any sign of fading. Amazing isnt it? Since then, I keep on trying many other mediums on wall and sometimes I even formulate my own paint to bring out this kind of thin layer but brilliant color result.Told u, it was fun!
When I started.
This is just a random picture I found in google. It's cute. |
I love painting on walls. Walls are like GIGANTIC blank canvases. I started painting ‘murals’ when I was 7 with marker pens. Yes, that time was when dad would chase me around the house with a cane in his hand. Okey, those aren’t actual murals, more like cave man’s documentary, but hey…the passion is there since then. Time passed, I painted my 1st actual mural when I was 15.It was a cherry blossom tree.I did it for fun. That was the 1st time I realized a nice mural can transform a space with maximum result in the most minimal time and it can make my parents really happy.
